wYou need to be confident when handling pets and be able to look after a number of different species. You should have a good knowledge of all pets and understand the daily needs of most domestic animals and know how to manage a crisis affecting one or all of them. wAs some pet owners will be very particular with their demands, you must be very tolerant of people and have natural tact and skills with people management to keep your clients happy. A nature that wants to please is a must as well as a good sense of humour and patience.

wYou must be prepared to sacrifice many hours to this career. You may be away from home for weeks at a time and you will need to manage your own pets and home accordingly. You will seldom have a settled working routine and you must be able to cope with this uncertainty and be very flexible with your time. Remember, most of your work is during normal holiday time, so be prepared to take your free time and holidays out of season.

wYou must enjoy your own company and obviously the company of animals as your days can get lonely if you are just seeing animals. If you are sociable with people, include dog walking in your routine so that you see the owners on a regular basis

wYou must enjoy spending time outdoors.

wYou must have the confidence to become your own boss and be able to have the discipline to manage your time effectively.
